Monday is a heavy day. Therefore, we decided to spend monday evening in full ammunition underwater. The weather was windy, but it can't stop enthusiastic people. Today Andrei Pavluschenko and I made an underwater march-throw.
For a long time I wanted to discover at the deeper part of Novik bay. In addition the southern wind today has «meshed up» coastal part. Armed with 15-liter cylinders, we took torches and went into the kingdom of Poseidon. Visibility is 1 meter. Course 210. Than further we go, the better visibility conditions appeared. Depth 7 m. Visibility is about 4-5m. Novik bay is rather shallow one. 15m depth parts (not counting a few pits) can be found only closer to the exit from the bay. The bottom of the Bay is covered with a thick layer of silt. So thick that my twenty-centimeter pointer goes into it with a part of hand. Deserted pieces of the bottom alternate with «oases» of red, green and brown algae. There were clouds of mysidas, hermit crabs and hide small fish among these algae.
The body felt cold. The temperature of the water dropped to 4 in Celsium. Andrei and I got into the cloud, already known to us from the past dive, miniature jellyfish «bougainvillia». There were so many of them that the water turned into jelly. This time there were some jelly's with a white core. Only with a detailed look at the photos, it became clear that inside thery were covered with caviar. Passing a little further, the water warmed again and the jellyfishes disappeared.
On one of the «wastelands» we found Tubularia. This beautiful bottom flower is actually a predatory animal. The flower itself is a zooid with a mouth and two rows of tentacles with stinging cells. The tubularias can catch small planktonic crustaceans. It is not possible to determine it's species yet. A little further I noticed lots of codium algae. At close-up view, each codeum was inhabited by a whole group of nudibranchs Placida Babai.
The divetime is 50 minutes, it's time to go back. The return trip took 15 minutes, since we were already on a straight line and did not stop. The wall of the pier appeared infront of me. I decided to visit the local «macro world». And the first creature I saw was a herb shrimp (Pandalus latirostris). Usually these shrips are active at nighttime, and in the daytime they hide in algae. But it seem to me that this one was attracted by the light of my torch. The shrimp was 12 centimeters long (it took almost a palm). And of course there were lots of nudibranches Cuthonella soboli very frequently encountered nudibranches at this place.
Distance 1 km, Dive time 74 minutes. Water +4. The maximum depth is 9 m.
The deeper part of Novik Bay in the area of Cape Melkovodny does not differ much from the coastal. But in a poor visibility along the coast, the seaward part has a significant advantage.
